Several suffer burn injuries in plant explosion

Posted on September 13th, 2011 No Comments

Earlier this month, several people suffered burn injures in a plant explosion in Penn Township, Pennsylvania.

According to Penn Township fire officials, the accident involved a liquid salt explosion.  The plant at which the accident occurred is located on Industrial Drive and manufactures machine and tool products.

3 workers at the plant suffered serious burn injuries and were flown in medical helicopters to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s regional burn unit.  Emergency crews transported the other injured workers to nearby hospitals for treatment.

EEOC issues new disability definitions

Posted on April 12th, 2011 No Comments

In accordance with the 2008 Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued new regulations concerning what constitutes certain disabilities.  The ADA Amendments Act was enacted on September 25, 2008 but did not go into effect until January 1, 2009.

The regulations keep the ADA’s original definition of a disability as “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.”  However, other regulations work to make it easier for workers to determine if they qualify for “regarded as” disability.  These changes make the law focus on how a person was treated, as opposed to an employer’s impression of a employee’s disability.

Six injured in pipe burst accident

Posted on February 14th, 2011 No Comments

Last week, six workers at the EME Homer City Generation power plant were injured after a steam pipe burst and shut down the facility.  A little before 8 A.M. last Thursday, a six-inch steam pipe ruptured causing an explosion of steam.  The plant’s automatic safety system shut the unit down and the company’s 255 employees were evacuated as quickly as possible.

The power plant generates around 1,884-megawatts of coal-fired power and has the largest smoke stack in the country.  Three generating units at the plant work to burn coal, which then heats water and makes steam, which turns a turbine to produce electricity.

Three of the injured workers were taken in a helicopter to West Penn Hospital and treated at the hospital’s burn unit.  The other three suffered unspecified injuries and were taken to Indianna Regional Medical Center.

VA expands disability benefits to veterans with PTSD

Posted on July 14th, 2010 No Comments

Previously, the Veterans Administration required veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder to provide documentation that they served on the front lines or were involved in a stressful event.   Also, while all veterans could be treated for PTSD, requirements limited those who could receive disability benefits.

However, last week, the VA altered its disability benefits regulations so that now veterans only need to provide documentation of serving in a war zone and an honorable discharge.

Officials say that war zones have changed, with unidentifiable “hot zones” endangering many, as opposed to a having a clear front line. “That’s what is different about these wars.   You could be a cook or a driver and be exposed to a violent situation,” stated veteran Josh Callahan of the Boise VA Medical Center.

Posted on June 16th, 2010 No Comments

A $37,100 grant has been awarded to the Jackson Township Recreation Board and the Jackson Township Board of Supervisors to make the Jackson Township Recreation Park accessible to handicapped citizens. The grant is intended to provide supplies that will give physically disabled citizens access to the pavilion, sports fields and playgrounds by paving the recreational park area.

The pavement, labor work and equipment to work on the project have all been donated by the B&J Paving Contractors of Shavertown with help from the Jackson Township Road Department.
