A Boswell, Pennsylvania woman recently filed a long-term disability lawsuit against her insurer after they refused to give her compensation for her brain injury. Susan G. Harris filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in Johnstown and named Unum Life Insurance Co. as defendant.

According to the lawsuit, Harris has had permanent brain damage that prevents her from working since June 2001. As a result of the brain damage, Harris suffers from short-term memory loss. Court documents accuse Unum Life Insurance Co. of unreasonably investigating her situation and disapproving benefits after approving a short-term disability claim.

Harris is asking for disability benefits payments and interest covering the time that she became eligible for disability to the court’s final judgement.

If you or someone you love has suffered a long-term disability and are not receiving the benefits you deserve, contact the Philadelphia long term disability lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. at 215-238-1130 to set up an appointment to speak with an experienced workers’ compensation attorney.

Earlier this month the Bureau of Labor Statistics released their first ever study of people with disabilities’ involvement in the labor force. According to the study, the labor force participation rate for people without disabilities is 64.5 percent while the rate for people with disabilities is 19.2 percent.

Researchers believe the recession was especially hard on people with disabilities trying to find work. While the unemployment rate for people without disabilities was at 9 percent, the rate for people with disabilities reached 14.5 percent. In addition, finding full time work is considerably harder for people with disabilities. Statistics show that a fifth of people without disabilities work part time compared to a third of people with disabilities.

A new educational book series designed to raise awareness for special-needs kids was announced this week. The “Kids With Special Needs” series is written from the perspective of fictional disabled children, allowing young readers to better sympathize with their peers who look or seem different from themselves. The books are mostly fictional, with sections of nonfiction information discussing causes and treatments regarding many of the ailments covered in each book. The term “special needs” is used to categorize more than 4.5 million children in the United States who suffer from disabilities varying from autism, to hyperactivity disorder, to learning disabilities and much more.

The publishing company behind “Kids With Special Needs” explained that children often have a lot of questions regarding their special needs friends and classmates because disability is often an uncomfortable subject to discuss with kids due to it’s complex nature. The good news is that, due to advances in medicine and technology, more children with disabilities and chronic illnesses are living longer and more functional lives. Because of this, school children are being exposed more to special needs kids in the classroom, extra-curricular activities and in their community.

If you or someone you know has sustained a long-term disability, contact the Philadelphia long term disability lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C. by calling 215-238-1130.

Business journals often encourage persons who own a business to consider their options when purchasing long-term and short-term disability coverage for their employees. While short term coverage often allows individuals to have financial assistance while they recover from their injuries, long term coverage will protect individuals who expect to miss work for a serious length of time, or for individuals who may not ever return to work. Employers must seriously weigh the types of coverage available and consider what type of protection they would like to obtain.
