Last week, a worker was injured in an industrial accident in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. The accident occurred at Steel Systems Installation on Tuesday at around 6 a.m.

According to sources, the worker suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries to his leg when something went wrong in a welding shop at the business. A piece of steel hit the worker’s leg, but investigators are currently unsure of what caused this to happen.

Other workers in the shop called 9-1-1, and emergency paramedics transported the victim to Lancaster General Hospital. The worker is expected to recover, but officials are still withholding the man’s identity.

The accident occurred at around 9 in the morning when a large pipe or beam fell on top of the worker’s leg. The pipe was being moved by a piece of machinery at the facility when something went wrong and it fell. Federal investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are trying to determine what went wrong.

The employee was rushed to Geisinger Wyoming Medical Valley Center’s trauma unit in Plains Township where doctors amputated the leg.

Last Friday, one worker was killed and another suffered serious leg injuries in a workplace accident at the Pepsi bottling plant in Tampa, Florida. The accident occurred at around 1:20 A.M. in the Pepsi warehouse located in between Busch Gardens and the University of South Florida.

Witnesses to the accident say that the automated lift used to move pallets of Pepsi products in the warehouse collapsed on top of the workers. The lift fell from about 20 feet in the air. One of the workers was trapped underneath the lift and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Paramedics were able to rush the other worker to Tampa General Hospital where he is recovering from serious leg injuries. Pepsi officials said that workers are usually not working in the same area as the lift, but the two men that were, were contracted from a company in Pennsylvania to do maintenance work on the lift system.

Our utmost sympathies go out to the victim’s family and friends.

A member of the deck crew of the M/V Titletown USA recently sued his employer, Bluegrass Marine and Marquette Transportation Company, after having to have his lower leg amputated as a result of an injury on the job. Gary Levis worked as the lead deckhand on the watercraft carrying seven barges northbound on the upper Mississippi River when he suffered the leg injury.

An accident occurred during his work as a deckhand in September 2009 when one of the barges came detached from the M/V Titletown USA. Levis filed the master of the crew’s orders to retrieve the barge, but in doing so suffered serious injuries. The master made a mistake in his orders and caused a line to become tighter until snapping into Levis’ leg. The line tightened around Levis’ leg and he had to have an emergency amputation.

A construction worker who fell two stories while working onthe exterior wall of a building has been awarded $9.36 million by a Bronx jury. The week-long trial centered mostly around the worker’s injuries.

The presiding judge, Justice Alan Sarks, had previouslyfound that the developer and general contractors of the building wereresponsible for their failure to provide the workers with any fall protection,as is required by New York’s worker protection law. At the construction sitethere were no lifelines, safety harnesses, nets or any other protection toprevent workers from falling.

The accident occurred in March of 2006. The worker fracturednumerous bones in both feet as well as a knee. He required several surgeriesand doctors testified that he will eventually require a wheelchair.

According to a 2008 report by the National Institute ofOccupational Safety and Health, construction is the number one occupation inthe United States for number and rate of fatal occupational injuries.
