Last week, a concrete column fell from the top of a 10-story building at a construction site at 5th Street and Chestnut. The construction was being performed on the Lafayette Building.
According to the Department of Licenses and Inspections, construction workers were working on excavating the building’s foundation. At around 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, the concrete column collapsed and fell onto three construction workers at the site.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating what caused the column to collapse. Furthermore, the Department of Licenses and Inspections requested that the construction company in charge of the project hire an engineer to examine the building.
All three construction workers hit by the concrete were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for treatment. One of the workers suffered serious leg injuries and had to have 90 percent of his right leg amputated after the construction accident.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim of this serious accident.
