According to the National Institute for Occcupational Safety and Health, workers in the healthcare industry are at a higher risk of workplace injury than workers in many other fields. Workers in this industry may be exposed to radiation, hazardous chemicals, and disease and infections. Because of this risk, it is important for employers to have adequate coverage to protect workers in the event of an injury.

Business journals often encourage persons who own a business to consider their options when purchasing long-term and short-term disability coverage for their employees. While short term coverage often allows individuals to have financial assistance while they recover from their injuries, long term coverage will protect individuals who expect to miss work for a serious length of time, or for individuals who may not ever return to work. Employers must seriously weigh the types of coverage available and consider what type of protection they would like to obtain.

According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, concussions (or mild traumatic brain injury) can have lasting effects on a person's health and well-being. The study made note of certain nerve-cell disconnections that occurred following concussions, leading researchers to conclude that even mild traumatic injury can cause permanent damage to an individual's brain.

A Philadelphia police officer who gained national attention for shooting an escaped chimpanzee that mauled a woman last year has filed a worker's compensation claim against the city. The officer's claim states that he has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder following the incident, and is seeking compensation for his medical expenses related to the condition. While the city currently accepts claims that involve the shooting of humans, a recent bill introduced in the state senate would provide worker's compensation benefits to officers who are forced to use deadly force on animals.

CIGNA Onsite Health has brought health and wellness training to the workplace by adding health company Kronos to its program. Kronos specializes in health education programs, coaching, screenings and lifestyle programs. It hopes to prevent workplace accidents by training individuals how to improve their health.
The company says that many of the most prevalent causes of death, injury and illness at the workplace are largely preventable. They hope to make this process more cost-effective and convenient for employers as well as decrease medical costs for companies. A Philadelphia man staged a robbery and shot his cousin in a conspiracy to gather workers' compensation insurance in 2002. The 46-year-old pleaded guilty more than a week ago and was given a five-year suspended sentence and 18 months probation for a single count of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.
The man and his cousin planned the fake armed robbery in a plan to file for workers' comp from the cousin's employer, United Parcel Service (UPS). During the robbery, as part of the plan, the man shot his cousin in the right leg. Liberty Mutual Insurance paid the cousin $250,000 two years later, some of which he shared with his co-conspirator. A former friend reported the fraud. The cousin confessed they got the idea from television.

A former Deputy-Warden testified recently he should be eligible for payments from the Wilkes-Barre worker's compensation fund, because he suffered serious health issues due to work-related stress. The former official claimed he suffered "blackout" episodes and extreme anxiety and panic attacks as a result of the pressures of his job. Sources say that the official was laid-off last week, and was allowed to remain on the payroll from August to January because he had unused sick and vacation time.
