Rain Can Make Outdoor Work Dangerous

Posted on July 27th, 2009 2 Comments

Rain can make working outdoors very dangerous.  Rain can help increase the chance for a slip and fall injury.  This increased chance of injury makes it necessary to take special precautions in wet conditions.

Surfaces that are slick or have the potential to become slick with water should be avoided when possible.  Metal platforms are an example of a surface that can become increasingly slippery if wet.  If these types of surfaces must be worked on while wet,  then the company needs to take the necessary steps in order to help protect the worker from a slip and fall injury.  Proper footwear,  harnesses, and other equipment can be utilized to achieve this goal.

Resort Citied in Ski-Worker Fall

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 1 Comment

The Wyoming Department of Employment has citied a ski resort in Wyoming for failing to protect a ski patroller that died when she fell last winter.  The skier died of head injuries while on a steep ski area on the resort.  The skier was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and died.

The resort did not have an official policy for patrollers or other workers wearing helmets while on the job. The resort has been cited with not providing proper head safety protection for its workers.

The resort will be appealing the decision.  The resort points out that no resorts in America have policies in place that address the use of protective headgear.

The case is still open and lots of debate will likely take place before this matter is resolved.

Refinery Worker’s Death Ruled an Accident

Posted on July 20th, 2009 6 Comments

The death of a refinery worker has been ruled an accident.  Initial reports looked into the possibility of the death as a suicide or homicide, however after an investigation officials determined that the worker was killed in an accident.

The worker was killed by drowning after falling from a water tower and drowning under the water.  The man had extra weights on him which added to his inability to swim or stay above the water level.

The company could face a punishment as a result of the accident.  Citations such as too low guard railing and no safety ladder could cause large fines for the company.

Investigators Determine Monorail Accident was Human Error

Posted on July 16th, 2009 No Comments

An investigation into the monorail accident has yielded evidence that likely pinpoints the reason for the accident.  Most investigators believe that the accident was likely caused by human error.

The investigators interviewed an employee who was put in charge of flipping a switch that would have prevented both monorails on the same track.  The individual apparently radioed that he had made the switch, however investigators determined that it did not occur.  Further, investigators found that mechanical failure likely did not occur.

The accident is still under investigation, and a full report should be released at a later date.

Monorail Investigation at Disney Continues

Posted on July 13th, 2009 2 Comments

An investigation into the fatal monorail accident at Disney is continuing.  The investigation has made significant progress into revealing the cause of the accident.

Currently,  details have emerged that indicate that the manager of the monorail and another Disney employee were eating at a Denny's across the street from Disney when the accident took place.  The manager and the other individual had asked another worker to make the important switch that would have prevent two mono-rail from being on the same track.  This switch was never made, which lead to the accident.

Company Fined $500,000 for Worker Death

Posted on July 8th, 2009 No Comments

A mine in Nevada has been fined more than $500,000 for safety violations that helped to contribute to the death of a worker.  The mine was an underground gold mine located in Nevada.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration announced that several supervisors paid over $50,000 in individual penalties and the company more for the accident.

An investigation into the incident showed that managers did not take safety as a priority which jeopardized the health of the workers.  A worker lost his life after falling through the ground floor of a mine, landing about 30 feet below, and having several thousand tons of weight on top of him.

An accident killed a worker during the grand finale of a firework show on the 4th of July in Quakertown.

Other workers and emergency workers attempted first aid, but it did not help.

Authorities are investigating the accident and hope to determine the cause. More information will be released in the future.

A construction worker in Maryland suffered a serious leg injury recently. While working early in the morning, the man was attempting to properly align some construction equipment.

The man then lost his footing and fell over.  At this point, the individual operating the equipment did not see the worker on the ground.  The equipment then moved forward and rolled over the man's leg, causing serious leg injury to the worker.
