Farmers Market Worker Killed

Posted on June 29th, 2009 2 Comments

An 85 year-old farmers market worker was killed in an accident on Saturday after he was electrocuted to death.  The man had worked with the farmers market for nearly 50 years.

The man was working on an Air Conditioning Unit, when he had completed a circuit with the wiring.    This sent a shock throughout his body.  A co-worker got worried when several pages to the man went unanswered.  The worker then went to the roof to check on the worker, and found him unresponsive.

Worker Saves Fellow Workers

An accident at the McCarran Airport in Las Vegas could have been a lot worse had it not been for the quick thinking and action of another worker.

A large cage had collapsed on five construction workers.  The large cage had the possibility of crushing the workers,  but one worker saw the accident and used a forklift to help remove debris and lift the heavy items off the workers.

Within 30 minutes, the individuals were being treated and sent to a hospital. The worst injury was a punctured lung and no life-threatening injuries were reported in this accident, and everyone is expected to recover.

Hybrid Vehicles Could Pose Worker Injury Risk

Posted on June 22nd, 2009 1 Comment

The use of hybrid vehicles is gaining popularity as many people are beginning to switch to these types of vehicles for environmental or other reasons.  Several worker injury groups have become to raise awareness of the possible dangers of massive adoption of these vehicles.

Hybrid vehicles pose a unique risk to workers because of the lack of noise.  Hybrid vehicles run much quieter than the traditional internal combustion engine.  This means that a vehicle can travel around without making much noise.  This has the potential to injure many workers in the future by being hit by a vehicle that they would have no idea was approaching. It will be up to companies to properly handle safety issues with hybrid vehicles when they begin to use them in their operations.

Large Vehicles Pose Dangers

Posted on June 19th, 2009 No Comments

Large vehicles that are used during construction projects can cause danger to an individual.  Large vehicles such as dump trucks, tractors, and other types of construction vehicles have been the cause of many worker related accidents over the years.

The large size of many of these vehicles make them difficult to control,  resulting in many accidents.  Workers can either be struck by the driver of these vehicles while they are working, or the actual vehicle itself can crash and cause injuries.

If any large vehicle is on a construction site, it is suggested that safety be a very important consideration to ensure a safe worker environment.

Injuries Need to be Reported

Posted on June 17th, 2009 No Comments

Some companies try to take advantage of workers who do not properly know how workers' compensation works.  Over the years,  many abuses in different industries has come forward.

One of the most common types of abuses is when a company fails to report an accident or injury in the accident log.  Some companies have even known to keep two separate logs, one that is given to regulators and government officials, and another that is kept secret within the company that has an accurate amount of information regarding workers injuries within the company.  If you know that this is happening,  please step forward and highlight these types of abuses.  This type of behavior puts workers at risk of greater injury.

A federal judge in Arkansas has finished Tyson Foods Inc. $500,000 after the death of a worker.  The company was fined the maximum criminal amount allowed, and has to serve a year's probation for violations. It was found in an investigation that Tyson did not take the proper safety steps needed to ensure the safety of the worker.

The violations occurred at a chicken processing plant in Texarakana.

One of the workers was killed in an accident after attempting to repair equipment.  The man was working on the equipment, when toxic fumes and gas caused the man to pass out and eventually die.

Explosion at Plant that Makes Slim Jim Beef Jerky

Posted on June 10th, 2009 1 Comment

A plant explosion at a ConAgra food plant has been responsible for the death of three workers, and the injury of many others. Over 30 people were injured in the explosion, and the severity of the injuries vary.

The explosion occurred in Garner, North Carolina at a plant that is used to produce Slim Jim, which are beef jerky sticks available across America.

At least three firefighters were injured from the rescue efforts.  The firefighters had to be treated for inhalation of ammonia fumes.  Ammonia is used in the refrigeration process of making the Slim Jims.

Authorities and officials are not sure what caused the explosion.  An investigation is currently being conducted.

Road Worker Killed in Accident and After by Car

Posted on June 8th, 2009 No Comments

A construction worker directing traffic in Arkansas recently lost his life after being struck by a car.

Authorities are investigating the accident.  The possible cause of the accident will likely be determined as sun glare.  The sun glare distracted the driver enough not to see the individual directing traffic.

Emergency workers were attempting to treat the man at a hospital,  but he died from injuries that were caused in the accident.

Pennsylvania recently had a 'Worker Awareness' month, that promotes safety to avoid accidents like this.  It is important to be aware of road signs pointing out workers on the road to prevent these types of death in the future.

Individuals who work in prison or other types of correctional facilities,  face many hazards daily at their work environment.  These hazards are a result of inmates and other factors that can lead to a dangerous work environment.

One of the top threats on the job is from the inmates.  Many times,  they will purposely try and injure a worker or officer.  If this occurs,  the officer needs time to properly recover and is entitled to the proper compensation for the injury that was suffered while on the job.

Supreme Court Rules in Favor of CSX Over Worker

Posted on June 3rd, 2009 2 Comments

The United States Supreme Court has recently reversed a decision that would have awarded a railroad worker over $5 million dollars in damages.

The worker had claimed in earlier trials that he had been exposed to harmful chemicals as a part of his job.  Further,  the worker showed that he had developed brain injuries and asbestosis because of the exposure.  One of the main arguments of the worker's suit against CSX was that he feared that he would develop cancer in the future.

The Supreme Court rejected the earlier ruling in favor of the worker, claiming that the judge did not properly give the jury instructions regarding the case. The case will return to the lower courts, and go back to trial.
