A new study has been released by the Federal Railroad Administration that includes accident and death statistics for the past few years.
Overall, the number of injuries were down for the year of 2008. Many officials state that better safety regulations, training, and procedures have lead to this drop. What is startling however, that is with the drop in accident, the number of deaths has increased. The number of rail road workers killed in an accident in 2007 was 16. However, in 2008 the number of deaths was 23. This is nearly a 50% increase in deaths for rail roads workers in a one year period. This statistics pointsout that although there are fewer accidents overall, the number of accidents that occur may be more serious.
