Police Officer with Brain Injury in Stable Condition

Posted on February 18th, 2009 2 Comments

The New York police officer shot in the head by a teenager last month is now reported to be in stable condition.  Anthony DiPonzio was shot on January 31 while investigating alleged drug dealing on a city street.

DiPonzio, 23, spoke last week for the first time since the shooting.  He was transferred on Monday to a brain injury rehabilitation center.  Doctors say his recovery could take up to one year, and that he is at risk of other conditions including brain infection.  However, they added that they were pleased DiPonzio's recovery progress thus far, saying that he is ahead of where they expected him to be.

DiPonzio is a native of Greece who served as a police officer in Rochester, New York.

A 14-year-old boy is accused of shooting DiPonzio in the back of the head with a .22 caliber rifle.  The boy has been charged with attempted murder and assault.

Unfortunately, tragic cases like this one are all too common.  If you or someone you know has been injured on the job, it is important to have a qualified legal expert on your side.  Contact the Philadelphia workers' compensation lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C.
