Workplace Diseases

When most people think of workplace injuries, they think of a single, one-time event that is immediate and causes a trauma to the body. Those are common, to be sure, but they are not the only way that workers can be injured at their place of employment. Some of the most devastating workplace injuries are those that happen over time and result in a serious disease. The most common form of these is lung disease, though that is far from the only possible illness.

Types of Diseases

People who spend long hours in mines, for example, are at a huge risk for lung disease as they inhale the dust from the mines every day. Newer technologies also make people much more vulnerable to these kinds of lung disease. Silicosis, for example, is a lung disease caused by the repeated inhalation of silica, a preventable phenomenon. Some of the most common diseases that can be caused by workplace problems are:

  • Lung diseases
  • Heart diseases
  • Hearing loss due to excessive noises
  • Asbestosis

The injuries that accumulate over time and result in serious diseases can often be more problematic than the one-time events that seem more traumatic. Precautions must be taken to protect workers from these types of long-term diseases.
