Traveling Employees
Many people travel extensively in the course of their jobs. This can include flying all over the world, driving around a given region, or other, less frequent and less lengthy travel. It is important to understand that there are provisions in workers’ compensation law that provide for injuries sustained while traveling for business purposes.
If your job requires you to travel around to various sites or meet with various clients within one city or region, a car accident that occurs while performing these tasks would presumably qualify you for workers’ compensation under the traveling employee status regulations. This opens up workers to a whole new array of potential accidents and injuries, as any possible problem that can occur while traveling is now a source of workers’ compensation injuries.
Also, there has been some debate about whether or not people who travel from their home to their job are in traveling employee status. A recent court case in Pennsylvania held that a home health nurse traveling from her home to a client’s home was indeed a traveling employee, and was therefore eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. This may or may not be the case for other workers traveling to the office- it is important to seek legal advice from an attorney to determine if you qualify.
