Radiation Poisoning
Radiation sickness, more officially called “Acute Radiation Syndrome” (ARS), can be very destructive. It typically occurs when people are exposed for a short time to a high dose of radiation. This sickness can occur, though, with prolonged exposure to lower levels of radiation, as well. Radiation sickness can include serious organ damage, which is not only very painful but extremely lethal.
Radiation exposure can happen in myriad of ways. Handling radioactive material, even in places that are designed to handle such matter, is a dangerous proposition. Employees can also travel to sites that are radioactive and can be poisoned that way.
One of the problems with radioactive sites is that they stay toxic for a very long time. It can take years, even decades, for the radioactive material in the atmosphere to reduce itself to a level that is not potentially harmful. In sites where bombs have gone off or power plants have had accidents, the area around the site can be a dead zone for many years.
It is extremely important that employers improve the working conditions for their employees, especially if there is a concern about radioactive material. Disposing of certain kinds of waste can lead to radiation poisoning, and doctors and nurses can be exposed if not trained properly or given proper safety equipment when handling certain machines.
