Falling Objects
Many workplaces have “hard hat zones” where the risk of injury from falling objects is great. At construction
sites, for example, a dropped hammer could prove fatal. By posting signs and providing employees with
hard hats and other safety equipment, employers can reduce the risk of death and serious injury for
their employees.
Hard hats are a long-proven and effective way of reducing injuries from falling objects. Although they
won’t protect against everything, a hard hat provides an enormous increase in protection. The human
skull is only about as tough as a coconut, so any decent-sized metal or rocky object falling from a
sufficient height can cause skull fractures.
Construction workers aren’t the only people at risk from falling objects at construction sites, however.
Many sites, especially in cities, are near sidewalks. Objects dropped from a building could easily reach
the sidewalk and cause death or serious injury to a passerby. For that reason, construction companies
put up temporary coverings over sidewalks below construction sites.
Employers are required by law to provide adequate safety measures for their employees, no matter what
the industry. If an organization fails to take adequate precautions for the safety of workers and the
public, legal action can be taken against them for this irresponsibility.
