Dehydration

Dehydration can be felt when as little as 2 or 3% of the body’s water is lost. It is extremely important for workers to stay hydrated because when athletes get dehydrated, they can suffer losses in performance by up to 30%. It only makes sense that a worker would lose productivity when dehydrated as well. It is in the employer’s best interest to keep his or her employees healthy and hydrated.

This is an especially important issue in areas and office environments that are especially hot. When people work outdoors, or in factories or warehouses that may not have proper air conditioning, the temperatures can be dangerously high.

Loss of vision, fatigue, dry skin, nausea, and other symptoms can be signs of dehydration. In addition to dehydration being potentially lethal, these symptoms can pose an additional danger to employees because their loss in performance can lead them to make dangerous mistakes. When their concentration is lessened and they are not at full health, they may be more inclined to suffer injury accidents on the job.

Dehydration is a serious issue that must be treated as such. Lack of water and fluids can be extremely dangerous, even lethal. It is paramount that all businesses provide a safe working environment for their employees, which includes adequate access to water and allowing time for employees to hydrate.
