Computer Injuries
Working at a computer certainly does not seem like a potentially dangerous activity. Most people would not put it very high on the list of ways to be hurt at work, but it can actually be a significant source of injuries. It does not seem that working at a computer is an activity that requires a significant amount of effort, and in many ways it is not, but it can lead to some specific and repetitive use injuries.
Maintaining proper posture can cause strain to the back, neck, and shoulder muscles, especially the ones that support the head. This can lead to direct injuries, or weaken the muscles to make injuries in other settings more likely. In either case, even when posture is proper and the workstation is set up well, the muscles can become strained and fatigued. Sitting in one single position for hours on end can lead to injury as well.
Repetitive use injuries are another problem arising from computer use. Using the mouse with one hand over and over again can lead to problems. The task of using a mouse is relatively simple, but using a mouse hundreds or thousands of times in a day without rest can lead to fatigue, weakness, and injury in small tendons, ligaments, and muscles in the hand.
