Avoiding Computer Injuries
There are a variety of steps that can be taken to prevent injuries that would be sustained by prolonged computer use. These injuries can include neck, back, and shoulder strain, as well as specific tendon, muscle, or ligament damage in the hands from repetitive keyboard and mouse usage. By simply changing up the routine, you can avoid the majority of all workplace computer injuries.
Variation in tasks and activities can go a long way toward reducing computer injuries. Using an adjustable desk and computer can be extremely helpful because the angle of the chair, desk, and computer screen can be changed regularly to avoid sitting in the exact same position for hours at a time.
Also, substituting keystrokes for mouse clicks can be an effective way to change the routine of hand usage and stay away from repetitive actions. Instead of using the mouse to click the print button, pressing Ctrl+P can be a good break for the hands. Switching the mouse usage between hands is also effective at preventing repetitive use injuries.
Taking short breaks is always helpful, even if it is simply standing up or moving around for just a few minutes. This allows the specific muscles in the hands and neck to rest, recover, and be prepared when you go back to work.
